Clutch pedal loose first two inches of travel.?

just had the clutch changed, friction disk pressure plate and flywheel. now the pedal is loose the first two inches of travel, but still engages however right off the floor. but after ive been driving for 15 minutes or so, it isnt loose anymore and the friction point moved up to just less than half(which is where it always was) does this mean it just needs to be bled?
Clutch pedal loose first two inches of travel.?
What kind of car?

Need to change clutch on 1988 Honda Civic, please tell me how, don't have money to pay shop to do it.?

Not sure about the engine specs. Fiance's car. 1.5L 16 valve, that's about all I know.
Need to change clutch on 1988 Honda Civic, please tell me how, don't have money to pay shop to do it.?
The clutch on your CIVIC is not too hard to change. I would recommend you purchase Chilton's Total Car Care Manuel first.

It will tell you step by step how to do it and what tools you need. Remember to dissconnect the battery and use jackstands. good Luck.

also, have your flywheel resufaced, use blue locktight on all bolts and make sure to install the clutch disc in the right direction.
Need to change clutch on 1988 Honda Civic, please tell me how, don't have money to pay shop to do it.?
1. Remove transmission

1a. Mark pressure plate to index it back to flywheel.

2. Remove pressure plate

3. Send pressure plate to machine shop.

4. Replace release bearing and pilot bearing

5. discard old clutch disc.

6. Look at and read new clutch disc.

7. Make sure alignment tool fits clutch and pilot bearing.

8. Go get pressure plate from machine shop.

9. Install clutch disc (remember what you read)

10. Install pressure plate the same way it came off.

11. tighten pressure plate bolts only a few turns at a time to take it down evenly. with a 180 offset pattern.

12. remove alignment tool and install transmission.

There you go a 12 step program.

I actually replace the clutch in my wifes 93 accord without removing the trans. I just pushed it back a bit and tilted it down.

Don't know if you'll be able to get away with that or not.
Disconnect the lower control arm nearest the transmission. Disconnect the CV axle from the wheel and pull out so that the axle can be removed. And then disconnect any hardware, levers, mounts, etc, from the transmission. Remove the bolts holding the trans. to the engine. Remove the transmission to expose the clutch. Remove the pressure plate bolts and drop the clutch. When reinstalling the clutch, be sure to align the pilot shaft bearing, in the flywheel, with an alignment tool or the transmission input shaft won't go back through the clutch plate. Reassemble. Good luck .

go to the library and take out a book and READ READ READ

remember the proper tools are more important then knowing how.

droping motors can be a killer
At the library they have tech books by Chilton鈥檚 that will give you step by step how to. However you need a lift to change a clutch it's almost imposable to do w/o one. You might have to remove the train to do it.
Its going to be very difficult if not impossible to pull the tranny if you don't drop the driveline!

Changing gear Whilst Driving without having the clutch down?

If you change gear Whilst driving without having the clutch lever down and the gearbox makes that screeching noise.

What actually happens?

What effect has it on the actual car, how long will it last do i have to change it?
Changing gear Whilst Driving without having the clutch down?
You are grinding the gears and you will ruin your transmision. It won't last long and will be very expensive to fix! I strongly recomend using your clutch everytime you shift gears!
Changing gear Whilst Driving without having the clutch down?
Here's the deal. If you do it right, you can shift a transmission without using the clutch. In fact, it's not a bad skill to have because clutches and clutch cables fail on older cars, like Volkswagens. But it isn't good for the gears because they chip, and can eventually break, as can other parts that are forced when you try to yank it into gear. The screeching noise you hear is the gears buzzing against each other because they are spinning at different speeds, and it is an indication that you are not doing it correcty. The more you do it, the sooner you will be replacing some or all of the transmission.
Can't find it,grind it?

You're grinding the cogs, that's what causes the screeching and if you continued doing it you'd feck the gear box up.
The syncros are mashing together when you hear that noise. Keep doing it and eventually you won't be able to get it in gear. Then you'll need a full rebuild or new trans. Save up!
That is like putting your finger into a fan that's running. What do you think will happen?

I drive a dodge srt4, changed the clutch after 60k miles, why did the new one only last me for 6 months?

My driving style has not changed. The new clutch was a factory mopar one. And it was done at the dealership. I don't get it...
I drive a dodge srt4, changed the clutch after 60k miles, why did the new one only last me for 6 months?
check and see if the turned or replaced the flywheel,i got one a while back that had a clutch put in it at dealer and they didn't bother to resurface the flywheel and the clutch only lasted a few months, its possible they thought it didn't need done and the mechanic choose not to have this done which would result in shorter clutch life, not all mechanics where it be a dealer or a small shop do what is always needed to be done, good luck.

MOPAR clutches are the best, so smooth. Check your driving skills.
learn to drive a standard and not ride the clutch you will find you will get more life out of your clutch ihave a 96 dodge neon and have the same clutch that came with the car and it has 176,000 miles on it and it is still in perfect condition so take it easy on your clutches and they will last a lot longer

  • Do you need to to disengage the clutch to change gear while the car is turned off?

Push in the the clutch to change gears?
Do you need to to disengage the clutch to change gear while the car is turned off?
You run the risk of damaging or bending shift linkages for starters, which over time, can result in poor shifting performance. Yes, you can pop it out of virtually any gear to neutral but there's usually some resistance felt. Forcing it into gear without a clutch is not recommended. Use the clutch it's there for a reason.
Do you need to to disengage the clutch to change gear while the car is turned off?
    No.

You will not hurt anything by shifting with the engine turned off, but sometimes the synchronizers don't quite not line up and therefore will not shift unless you press the clutch!

Are you a double amputee? If you are get your car adapted or get an auto tranny. The clutch is there for a reason use it.

    Suzuki vitara clutch problem?

it was going into gear untill i changed clutch slave cylinder now it wont go into gear at all. i was told it was the clutch master cylinder
    Suzuki vitara clutch problem?
If you haven't done it yet, bleed both the master and slave cylinders. Air will compress in the system, brake fluid won't. If there is air in the lines, the movement of the master cylinder will not be enough to allow the clutch to disengage from neutral or any other gear.

When changing gears on a manual, do you release the clutch all the way before applying the gas?

I just bought a manual transmission car and I got 1 hour lesson from a driving school just to understand the basics. The instructor said when in first gear, I have to release the clutch slowly and apply gas at the same time to keep the rev constant. However when changing from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd, he said to release the clutch slowly all the way and THEN apply the gas...is this true? After doing some reading, it seems whenever you need to shift, you should release the clutch and apply some gas at the same time.

Also, how do you rev match? How do you know what the rev should be compared to how fast you're going?
When changing gears on a manual, do you release the clutch all the way before applying the gas?
the clutch will 'take up' before it is fully out. this can be adjusted and should start connecting not far from the floor.

rev matching is very good and is what is achieved by 'double clutching' as race drivers do. this will reduce the drag on your gearbox when you change gears. this takes a bit of practice but most people don't do this. drive a car without synchro gears and you have to 'double clutch' but they probably don't exist today LOL

as you feel the clutch engage you should start applying pressure to the accelerator. driving is improved by being aware of the sound of your motor and knowing when to change gears by the sound .. you will also be able to judge the amount of rev to get 'rev matching' right.

don't just Drive a car - understand what you are doing (it is a leathal weapon) and what is happening with each action you take. I believe this will improve anyones driving.
When changing gears on a manual, do you release the clutch all the way before applying the gas?
You and your car need to get to %26quot;know%26quot; each other....on the next sunny day, take her out on less traveled roads ...%26quot;feel%26quot; the clutch....feel the gas.....and find a happy medium! When u r in higher gear u DO NOT need to add gas because of the rpm's sorta like free falling...you'll see.

O! and once you have a stick you will never go back to automatic .
I usually let off the gas, shift then press the gas just as the trans grabs, you will feel it grab. Some people give it gas and release at the same time, I dont do it that way. Just drive and you will get your own pattern down. I never heard of rev match.... it dosent matter what the rev is as you are driving, just dont red line the engine, then you are past when you should have shifted.
Both at the same time. Practice by revving the engine -- JUST A LITTLE -- and then very slowly going up and down on the clutch with the other foot. The clutch is not %26quot;All or Nothing%26quot; it matters how hard you've got it pressed. if you let up on it without your foot on the gas, at least a little, you'll stall. you should be going up with the clutch only when you're going down with the gas slowly. When you've got the clutch pressed all the way down and then let it up completely and suddenly that's called popping the clutch and you only want to do that in extreme situations.
Not true. If you do that the car will tend ot jerk you forward in the seat. You need to give it some gas while you release the clutch. Once you get some practice, you will know how much gas to give it. Don't worry, it's like riding a bicycle, once you learn then you'll never forget. It won't take too long either. If you can, find an empty shopping mall parking lot or some other deserted site, then go over there and practice going from 1st to 2nd and 3rd until you get a feel for it.
You have to give it enough gas as your releasing the clutch to keep it from stalling. You should be able to feel the clutch grabbing and that will tell you when to start giving it gas. There is no certain amount to give cause it is a give and take. You don't want to let out to much clutch and buck either. In time you will get the feel and your ride will get much smoother. I don't think you should release the clutch all the way and then give it gas cause you will stall and have a rough ride. As you release the clutch slowly and feel it grab, you give it little gas and kind of equalize it. Hope this helps a little.
No, you release the clutch WHILE applying the gas.

How easy is it to change the clutch on a Rover 400, 2 litre turbo diesel 1998 model?
its like any other clutch replacement job.
its a pain in the azz
Since you have a Rover ; Normally it is a 4x4 which means its a lot harder to replace the the clutch than a 2 wheel drive! The good news is that its not as hard to replace the clutch as a front wheel drive. If you have enough friends with mechanical background and some needed tools you can do it. Otherwise you need to pay someone to do it.
It's impossible due to the fact it would cost more than the car is worth. End of the day....... It's a Rover 400.

    Also the 400 means it's worth in penny's...... Sorry ; )
As clutch replacements go, it's one of the easier ones (if you have the equipment). At least you don't have to remove a subframe.

Why do i have to press the clutch several times to engage first, after that it shifts ok?

i have a mitsubishi eclipse, i change the clutch but now i have to press the clutch several times to put the first gear, after that it shifts ok, any ideas ????
Why do i have to press the clutch several times to engage first, after that it shifts ok?
Is it the hydraulic or is it mechanical

If it is hydraulic bleed the system and checkfor fluid leaks

If mechanical the pressure plate could have been warped when it was fitted
Why do i have to press the clutch several times to engage first, after that it shifts ok?
sounds like a problem with the clutch itself. Did you do it or a shop? If a shop did, take it back to them. If you did, take it off and see if you can find the problem.
what year is your eclipse spider! and color!
To me it sounds like a couple problems. First thing I'd look at is the preasure plate. Doesn't sound like it's realising properly. Second, the clutch. Is the clutch slipping?
simple problem with a simple solution again, take it to a shop, have it replaced or buy a act clutch from ebay have them put it on for you pay $300 bucks VoILA! ull be shifting smoothly with no problems. peace!

  • After i installed a clutch master cylinder in my 93 honda accord whats next ?

my clutch pedal became loose and my clutch fluid was very low under the dashboard were the clutch pedal is at the clutch master cylinder was leaking fluid so i changed the clutch master and bleed the clutch but the clutch pedal is still loose and wont work.
After i installed a clutch master cylinder in my 93 honda accord whats next ?
Usually when you change the clutch master you change the clutch slave cylinder as well. The two work together and when 1 goes the other usually goes shortly after. Peel back the rubber boot on the clutch slave cylinder and if there's any evidence of brake fluid behind the boot then you'll need a slave cylinder too. Sometimes the clutch master/slave can be a bear to bleed. Did you bench bleed the master first before installing? Or when you bled it did you let it run dry on fluid while bleeding? If either happened your best bet is to pressure bleed it(most shops have a pressure bleeder). Or you can try cracking the bleeder screw and gravity bleed it. Crack the bleeder valve and let it dribble out for awhile, while making sure the master doesn't go dry, then have someone assist you with bleeding. Good luck and hope this helps.
After i installed a clutch master cylinder in my 93 honda accord whats next ?
time to have it towed to a professional mechanic.
It is a good idea to replace the slave cylinder on the transmission at the same time because they usually fail first.

Bleeding the clutch is never easy. You need someone to push the clutch pedal with their hand. Slowly pump it twice, have them hold it down while you quickly open and close the bleeder. Do this 10 to 15 times and make sure you never let the reservoir go dry. The clutch pedal needs about 1/8th inch of free play, feel it using your hand.

Need steps on how to change my clutch fan?
just four bolts holding it on really might have to remove fan cover to get to it or get it out but removing fan pretty basic four bolts and nuts you can type into search box

    how to replace clutch fan

how to replace clutch fan video

might find a how to can find most car repairs by typing how to replace how to install how to remove name of part and some times even a video by adding that to end since how most cars work everything about the same some things change but how to is pretty much same
The clutch and the fan come off as an assembly. Unbolt it from the water pump, change the clutch, bolt it back on.
it,s not hard to do. just take the belt off, take off 4 bolts and off it comes fan and all. then take out about 4 more bolts and off comes the clutch.

Why does the clutch pedal have no resistance?

my uncle kept telling me that he was wanting to have me change his clutch on his 98 chevy s10 and when i went out there to see what it was doing i came to the conclusion that it was either the clutch hydraulic line or the clutch master cylinder. its lost all pressure. the engine will turn over in gear. we put it in neutral and staryted it and it wouldn't go into gear which is telling me that the clutch is not engaging. what is most likely the problem.
Why does the clutch pedal have no resistance?
It sounds like the clutch cable is broken. If it's a hydraulic clutch, check the clutch fluid level. If it's ok, then the master or slave cylinder needs changing. I've also seen one where the clutch fork was broken. This required dropping the transmission to repair.
Why does the clutch pedal have no resistance?
the clutch itself could be broken, if it is a hydrolic line then like you said there will be a problem with the pressure some wear, check everywear along the line for leaking oil, if there's no leak and the oil reservoir is full then it's probably the clutch it self?
The way a clutch is designed is that it is always engaged. Pressing the pedal disengages the clutch. Your problem is a pressure leak. Check to make sure the reservoir is full, if it is, bleed the line.

Changed clutch/flywheel/release bearing...still smells of burning?

    2000 Hyundai Accent

Putting clutch in and trying to put in first gear is almost impossible to put in the majority of the time. After accelerating, putting in clutch and trying to shift into second it also can be difficult.. and sometimes sounds of rattling and you can feel some vibrating. Every other gear seems ok. Could it be something else that is wrong? Seems to feel the same as before the clutch was changed except that reverse works better now. I've read also about a pulse generator (considering my car apparently goes through a lot of these)...any ideas?
Changed clutch/flywheel/release bearing...still smells of burning?
How about adjustment??? If there is an adjustment, it could be too loose (or too tight) . I would go for too tight first! Because if the throwout bearing is still %26quot;bearing%26quot; on the clutch release %26quot;spring(s)%26quot; and I mean %26quot;really hard%26quot;,--- it will possibly still make the input shaft of transmission continue to turn when you have the clutch %26quot;down%26quot;, - and at the same time be loose enough that the clutch slips while you are driving (hence the smell). Remember that if you put in new clutch plagte, (and the old one was really worn down to nothing), - it is going to be the equivalent of holding your foot down on the clutch a little (making it slip), -- if the throwout bearing is riding on the %26quot;release%26quot;, - it is turning all the time ( possible reason for rattling and noise). I have never seen one that drives at all this way, (usually it won't %26quot;pull at all%26quot;), however I would guess this is possible, first of all the %26quot;new flywheel may be a little bit %26quot;thicker%26quot; and of course the %26quot;plate%26quot; will be thicker, - and the pressure plate may have higher %26quot;throwout %26quot;fingers%26quot; or (contact area in case of %26quot;flat plate spring type)-- Such as right pressure plate (or even wrong one), - but made by a different manufacturer.

Normally %26quot;too loose%26quot; adjustment of clutch would make the transmission hard to shift out of neutral (depending on how %26quot;loose%26quot; it is, - -- at this sort of operation I would say it would be almost %26quot;tight enough%26quot;, -- because if it was real loose, it would not work at all, --(meannig you could not even start car in gear with clutch down)! It would act as if you didn't have the pedal pushed down,- (and would not smell, because it could not %26quot;slip at all%26quot;)!

So first thing I would do is disconnect linkage to the clutch at transmission, - (put car in neutral), start engine and see if it still makes the same noises and vibrations. If it sounds like %26quot;normal%26quot; (as it did before clutch replacement), then %26quot;adjustment%26quot; is your problem. ... However if the noise is still there, - then something is wrong either inside the transmission, - or the pilot bearing is wrong,- or there was still something still in behind pilot bearing when you replaced it, and it is fitting in too %26quot;tight%26quot; (as if the shaft were too long and hitting at end of pilot %26quot;stub%26quot;)!

I am assuming that the origional flywheel is still in use?? If you had to take it off, did you torque it down to the right specifications?- Did you have to remove it to get pilot bearing out, (or did you even change the pilot bearing)?? Pilot bearing is the small bearing in rear of engine, (either in the flywheel, or in rear of crank flange), There is a small peg or %26quot;pin%26quot; that is on the end of the shaft out of transmission that %26quot;plugs%26quot; into this bearing and keeps the shaft running streight when pedal is pushed down and clutch is not engaged, --------- it will be noisy when pedal down, if it is bad!

So you have a number of things that may or may not be wrong, which is going to need a %26quot;methodical check%26quot;.

If you aren't too mechanically inclined,- you may want to get somebody with more knowledge to check this out for you!

If you put it in yourself, - - stop and anylize everything carefully, and start emliminating possibilities one at a time till you arrive at a %26quot;most likely%26quot; conclusion! If you have have no choice but to take it out and start all over again.... make sure the %26quot;noise/vibration%26quot; is not in the transmission (and just an added problem - besides clutch), - because it would be a real pain to have to take it out another time to get transmission fixed too!

It takes a long time to explain it all, but you need to understand exactly what is happeniing and why,- in order to find problem, and fix it!
Changed clutch/flywheel/release bearing...still smells of burning?
First off, a pulc generator, is for the ignition, and wont cause your problem. It dound like a shift fork, or sinkro problem in your transmission. I ou arent skilled at them, then i would suggest taking it to someone who is.
might not be the wheel system.

    1. Changed my oil using synthetic oil

    2. Ran fine for about 50 miles, than disaster. It felt like my clutch was slipping, therefore I changed the oil again with factory recommended oil. When I say that my clutch felt like it was slipping, it feels like when your bike is running out of gas

    3. After the oil change with regular 10W-40, Ive been having less clutch slippage, however, there are still some issues

    4. When in first gear and as I release the clutch and give some throttle, the engine dies or goes to 0 rpm, but if I press the clutch the rpm goes to its normal level

    5. Another issue I also have is when I'm in a higher gear, it will feel like I am running out of gas and the bike jerks.

    Please help me.
Oil change for Ninja 250. Post oil change, clutch slippage, engine feels like there is no gas?
You put too much oil in there. The level should be between the two lines. Check the level, and if there's too much, let some out until the level is correct.

Oh yeah, your plugs are fouled now, so clean them and make sure the gap is correct and the same for both plugs.
Oil change for Ninja 250. Post oil change, clutch slippage, engine feels like there is no gas?
I dont know about ninjas, but was this the engine oil, transmission oil, or is it all in one?If the oil had friction modifiers and it was in the tranny, it probably glazed the clutch plates. If im correct, there is no fix except to replace them.

I have a 2000 Vauxhall Astra and the clutch on the air con pump is not working. Can the clutch be changed?
it most certainly can. if you do change it id advise you also change the bearing for the free spining pully too as they do have a tendancy to seize which locks the belt up so while it is off may as well be safe. but befor you do actually change the clutch id do a little fault diagnosis first. make sure the cable that goes into the pump has a live feed when you turn the aircon on and also make sure the pump is well earthed because if you have a fault with either of these the clutch wont engage

I wouldn't even attempt this if you've never done it before, nor would I suggest taking your parts to a shop and having them installed as there will be NO WARRANTY. You also need to have the flywheel resurfaced and pilot bearing replaced when the clutch kit is replaced. I would take yours back and get your money back and pay the 750 and get a warranty.

EDIT - Look into where you live, I know where I live, the state will help people with car repair bills if you cant afford to pay that much.
93' toyota: how hard is it to change the clutch out yourself... if your not too mechananically inclined?
If you have never installed a clutch and are not mechanically inclined, then i would not suggest attempting it yourself. If you do not know what you are doing you can cause severe damage to the vehicle.
The above person speaks the truth. If you start the project you will learn very quickly why they charge that much in labor. Most of the cost to get anything done at any shop is going to be mostly labor, and if you knew how much work those guys have to do with some things you'd understand why.

  • Why does car shut off when clutch is pressed?

    Hello,

I am having a problem. I have a 99 mazda protege which is standard. After driving about 5 minutes, when i press my clutch to put my car in gear, the engine will just shut off. I am able to restart my car, but it is driving me crazy.

A week or two ago I was having this problem and my cousin, who is a mechanic, changed the clutch bearing. I had no problem for about a week, but yesterday it started again.

Anyone know why this is happening and what to do to fix it?

    Thank you
Why does car shut off when clutch is pressed?
    Hello,

most standards, have a open circuit switch, this is a safety switch. The switch is located right near the clutch pedal.Take a flash light and you should see the switch.see if the wires are loose from the connector,if not, see if the switch is jamed. These switches are non to

shot out becase of the constant shifting. Bring the bad switch to the auto-parts store so they can match it with a replacement switch.

    Hope this helps Pete
Why does car shut off when clutch is pressed?
probably the clutch switch or neutral safety switch is shorting to open cutting the 12v power lead to the computer instead of staying closed.
ur cuz is no mechanic...the clutch safty switch is worn/bad...when u normaly start car you push in clutch...switch makes sure it cant start in gear..... cost 50 dollars....cost of bearing 200 to 300 [but not needed]
There isnt any neutral safety switches on manuals...It is a clutch safety switch.Sounds like the problem you are having.

When you change the clutch, should the master cylinder be replaced?

second clutch being replaced on a 05 Kia Spectra5..
When you change the clutch, should the master cylinder be replaced?
No, but you need to bleed the air out of it if you remove it from the line. Unless its bad, then replace.
When you change the clutch, should the master cylinder be replaced?
Only if it is bad .. Does the Master Cylinder leak? If it doesn't leak, you shouldn't have to replace it.
It should be inspected for leaks and tested to insure it functions OK. Usually the master cylinder is located under the hood, on the firewall, drvrs side, up high. So it's replacement isn't directly related to the labor cost for clutch replacement.

However, in some cases, the slave cylinder is inside the transmission housing %26amp; replacement while doing the clutch would make sense.
Master cylinder can be changed at any time, so unless it's bad now don't bother. But if the slave cylinder is the type that's built into the throwout bearing, I would change it while you're doing the clutch. It might prevent taking everything apart again a little later.
No, it doesnt, only reason for changing master cylinder is if visibly leaking, or if problems with clutch pedal, like no pressure, if its not a line or slave cylinder. But my question is how are you on second clutch on a 2005 vehicle?
they ain't related. Why would you even think of changing the master cylinder. Why are you replacing the clutch a second time on an 05 car? Is this a car I want to avoid? I'm glad you've got the love affair with it cause clutch changes ain't cheap. If you're referring to the slave don't replace it, but you'll have bleed it when you're through with the job.

Apart from gear changing, what is the purpose of the clutch and how do you use it?

I've had a few lessons and I get that I need to press it when I change gears, that bit makes sense to me

However, I am confused with how and what it does for the rest of it, and what I need to do?

Like whenever I start, I have to press the clutch and the gas pedal?

And the whole clutch up too much or down too much or something and it rolls and at a certain point it just stays still? Can someone explain please?
Apart from gear changing, what is the purpose of the clutch and how do you use it?
Imagine if you will, two plastic CDs , take one in one hand and another in your other hand.

Insert one CD AGAINST the other and pressing until a turning force can be exerted from one CD to the other.

the energy implied to one CD has now exerted a force upon the other and you have created a hand made clutch.

Hence the force generated by a cars engine is transmitted to the gearbox via a clutch.

The transmission is engine, clutch, gearbox, the clutch being spring loaded to return to the engaged position when the foot releases the pedal.

The purpose of the clutch is to disengage the engine from the gearbox allowing the gears to be selected when the correct ratio of engine speed to road speed has been aligned correctly for the conditions that the vehicle is facing; I.E. up hill slog or a down hill controlled movement or indeed any other road condition which may require a gear change.

Gear changes are made to reduce the load on the engine and increase efficiency.
Apart from gear changing, what is the purpose of the clutch and how do you use it?
The clutch disengages power from the engine to the transmission so that you can change gears without ending up with little metal shavings everywhere and damaging your vehicle.

To start your vehicle, you do not hold the gas. You press the clutch all the way in and turn the ignition, thats it. It is difficult for a motor to start when it is already doing work while it is starting, So vehicles wont let you start unless the clutch is in.

Yes, if the car is in first gear and you are at a stop, at a certain point when releasing the clutch your car will move slowly forward without having to give any gas. Many people refer to this as the catching point in the clutch. It is at that point in the clutch where you should have some bit of gas on while releasing or you will cause bouncing, stalling etc...

If you are on a hill, the car will always roll while the clutch is engaged. Since there is no power being transferred from the motor to the transmission, the wheels will freely move whichever way gravity pulls the car untill power transfer starts.
You have to have the clutch/break in to start the car (not the gas), but aside from that it is only used for shifting up/down gears.
the clutch is used to seperate the engine from the transmission. when you have the clutch in, no power is going to the wheels. when you start, you let the clutch out and give it gas so you can move without stalling.

Wher do you put gear oil in after you have changed the clutch?

    1994 geo metro
Wher do you put gear oil in after you have changed the clutch?
Actually, there are 2 different possibilities on the 1985-2000 Geo Metro, neither of which involve removing the speedometer gear.

With both types, it is recommended that you first bring the vehicle to operating temperature.

On models with an Oil Level Gauge, unscrew said Gauge from the top of the side case of the transaxle. Wipe clean. Fit gauge into hole without screwing in, then pull out and read gauge. Level should be between Full and Low level line. Fill as necessary. (presumably through same hole)

On models with Oil Level/Filler Plug, unscrew plug (looks like behind and slightly above drivers side halfshaft). Level should be even with the bottom of the plug hole. Fill as necessary. (again, presumably through same hole) Replace Oil Level/Filler Plug, and torque to 40 ft. lbs.

If you'd like to send me a real e-mail address, I'd be happy to scan the pictures of each and send them to you as attachments.
Wher do you put gear oil in after you have changed the clutch?
You remove the speedo gear and add fluid until its too the middle of the speedo gear.
there should be a plug on the side of the trans. better get an owners manual for amount, location and frequency of checking.
thanks scott i knew there was a way to fill those %26quot;sealed%26quot; trannys. lol

is that possible i thought yu can ride a clutch on a motorcycle my father gave it to me and i used it one Sunday for about 2 hours and he said i burned the clutch out is that possible
I got a honda cbr f4i 2002 and it needs the clutch changed think i burned it out while learning how to ride?
Try having it adjusted and change the oil.

On every vehicle, every single time (except once) I have heard %26quot;bad clutch%26quot; the person was dead wrong.

Mechanics included, until they have it apart.
I got a honda cbr f4i 2002 and it needs the clutch changed think i burned it out while learning how to ride?
I suppose it's possible, but on a Honda it's highly unlikely that 2hrs of abuse led to it's demise. It had likely been abused long before you got to it!
Well, for one thing you don't say what condition the clutch was in before you started riding. If the bike is already seven years old you have no idea how abused that clutch may or may not have been before you got it.

And yes, if the clutch is already less-than-perfect, if you ride hard or aren't smooth on the clutch -- which you won't be if you're just learning to ride, if you don't fully release the clutch lever while riding, it is possible to burn out a clutch in just two hours.
bikes have wet clutches, it takes ALOT to burn them out, change the oild and take it for a ride, maybe the person who had it before put the wrong kind of oil in, that can affect a bike clutch badly
    possible? sure...

Likely? not unless the clutch was almost toasted before you got it...
I bet the previous owner abused the bike with clutch up wheelies.
Got to agree with the other posters. The amount of clutch slippage that might be caused by a new rider just learning to start off is not nearly enough to toast the clutch. An afternoon of full-throttle starts at the drag strip might leave the clutch a little crispy, but even then, it will usually be okay with an adjustment. Get a dirt bike stuck in the mud and try to power it out while fanning the clutch. That might fry your clutch in short order.

Unless you aren't letting on how much you really abused that clutch, it had to be pretty well gone before you got your hands on it.
Yes it is possible, but to know for sure, pull the inspection cover, and see if there is a burnt smell coming from the clutch pack. If no burnt smell then no burnt clutches(you will know) then follow jacobs advice and check the oil and change it, it could be low which can cause a bit of problems, since like has been posted, the clutches are %26quot;wet%26quot; meaning the oil, fluid, keeps them wet and allows them to engage and disengage smoothly.
You sure it's the clutch burnt out, or the cable needs adjusting?

The cable can be stretched in about 2 hours of riding, but not the clutch.

If the clutch has gone, it's had serious abuse before you sat on it. Unless you were just wheelying for 2 hours on and off.
    see if it will adjust!

Is it bad to change the clutch fan to two eletrics from GM on a deisel?

I want to change the clutch fan on my 2005 Duramax diesel Silverado, to two S-blade eletric fans. Would that be a bad thing to do. The fans that I found are made by GM for my year in pickup. If you have any suggestions for me that would be great, Please e-mail me at devsoutter@yahoo.com. Thanks
Is it bad to change the clutch fan to two eletrics from GM on a deisel?
As long as they pull the same cfm, no sweat. The truck doesnt know the difference. In fact, you could try running one with the engine, and the other triggered by the a/c clutch. If no overheating problems with a/c off, it would save more fuel.

I wouldn't trust wiring through a temperature switch. I would wire the fan through a relay to carry the current, of course, but use the ign switch to trigger the relay. And the a/c clutch to trigger the other relay for the other fan, if you choose that option. Just be sure to fuse the large current carrying wires at the battery. If need more info on wiring, e-mail me.

it would work fine as long as it is wired to temp sending unit...you might even gain a little fuel mileage ...it is a common swap..

Cost to replace a clutch on a 1996 audi a4 quattro?

The clutch on my Audi is really old. I need to replace it but i want to know how much it costs. one mechanic told me about $1200, is that reasonable? I would like to know if anyone has ever changed the clutch on their Audi. How much did it cost you?

Would it be cheaper to buy the piece separately, then just have a mechanic put it in?

it be nice if people with a similar car to mine would answer thanks bro's
Cost to replace a clutch on a 1996 audi a4 quattro?
That is reasonable, consider the fact that the transmission has to be removed from the engine. However, you could purchase the clutch kit to save on parts. It's the labor that bites the wallet.

How do i change the clutch on my 92 Honda civic dx?
You'll need the following tools if you don't already have one:

A clutch disc and pressure plate kit. Costs about $100 from your local auto parts store.

Ball joint remover fork. You'll need this to lift the lower ball joint off the lower arm ball joint.

Air compressor and impact wrench (900+ lbs.ft). An impact wrench is the best way to remove a tight axle nut.

Punch pin. The right sized punch pin will help you remove the pin that holds your gear rod together.

Transmission jack (or jack with a transmission adapter). You'll need this to lower/lift your transmission bell evenly from under the car.

Clutch gear holder. This may come as a simple plastic gear that allows you to align the teeth to the flywheel and clutch disk when you put in the replacement.

Torque wrench. You'll need to torque all of your bolts to specification with the highest one (axle nut) about 140 lbs. ft.

Ratchet box wrench. These can be handy when you need to get into tight spots. Using an iron pipe over a box wrench can give you lots of leverage if necessary.

It's probably one of the hardest jobs I had done for the first time but not impossible. You'll need to buy a Honda Civic Service manual for exact step by step instructions (one officially from Honda is preferrable)

Basically, you'll be instructed to jack up your car onto jackstands, remove your left wheel and drain your transmission fluid.

Then you'll need to remove both axles. The intake air pipe, element air box, radiator overflow reservoir, slave clutch cylinder, starter, shift rod, side and rear transmission/engine mounts before you get a chance to unbolt the transmission (weighs about 80 lbs).

Inside you simply replace the old clutch disc and pressure plate. If you think your flywheel looks bad, you can replace that too. Make sure you put grease around the clutch fork contact points and other necessary spots.

The toughest part can be getting the transmission bell to align back onto the engine. If you don't have a transmission jack, it can be difficult and time consuming.

    Good luck!
dont have to drop the trans out.....wtf is your problem.....you do tho need to seperate the bellhousing from the enging......personally i suggest having someone that knows what there doing do it

How do I reach the bolts behind the engine of my 1988 Isuzu Trooper suv in order to change the clutch ?

I have a 1988 Isuzu Trooper with 5 speed transmission and an inline 4 cylinder engine. I am used to doing some work on older, domestic vehicles where I can move my large hands about easily. I will need to replace the clutch. It seems to me that there is a ridiculously small, almost nonexistant amount of space between the clutch housing-to-engine bolts and firewall. some bolts I cannot even see. I wonder if anyone has run into this problem? John
How do I reach the bolts behind the engine of my 1988 Isuzu Trooper suv in order to change the clutch ?
When you remove the bolts on the rear mounts (at transmission) the entire assembly drop creating an access to the upper bolts. Be sure to drain the fluid from the transmission first or it'll get real messy. You will still have to use a long extension, and posibbly a swivel socket.
How do I reach the bolts behind the engine of my 1988 Isuzu Trooper suv in order to change the clutch ?
a lot of times, piece of cake.

long extension(very long) and swivel socket plus drop lite, from drive shaft area.
You will have to move the engine forward. What I did was to take off the hood, take off radiator and the front grille. Took out the engine mounts and lifted the enginer slightly off the frame using a lifter. To move the engine a few inches forward, I also needed to disengage the engine propeller shafts and transmission brace and mount. Be sure you have a mount on that tranny case or it will fall down. Took about 4-5 hours work.

Clutch drainer for a 1999 Volks Wagen, Beetle.?

I am trying to drain and change clutch fluids, but I can't find the drainer for it.
Clutch drainer for a 1999 Volks Wagen, Beetle.?
You will need to locate the slave cylinder. It sits next to the release fork of the clutch. There should be a small outlet with a six sided nut surrounding it. This is the bleeder screw.

Attach a hose and submerse it in clutch fluid. Make sure the master cylinder stays full at all times. Release the screw slightly and have someone press the clutch pedal. You should see air bubbles. With their foot still depressing the pedal, close the screw and let the pedal rise back up. Repeat until no air comes through the line.

How do I fix my clutch on my crx

I had my clutch changed but I think the person who did it did it wrong so I wanna try to take it out an fix it myself but I need a step by step coz I'm not sure how to go about it any help will be appreciated thnx
How do I fix my clutch on my crx
FIRST REMOVE THE 2 BOLTS ON THE BOTTOM OF THE STRUT (EACH SIDE), THEN THE AXLE SHAFT BOLTS, USING A PRY BAR POP OUT THE SHAFTS FROM THE TRANSMISSION, THEN REMOVED THE STARTER AND UPPER BOLTS TO THE TRANSMISSION (THE ONES ACCESSIBLE FROM THE TOPSIDE. IF THE BOTTOM SUB-FRAME MUST BE REMOVED THEN YOU WILL NEED TO HOLD THE MOTOR UP WITH EITHER A ENGINE HOLDER OR A JACK-STAND UNDER THE ENGINE. THE REMOVE THE TRANSMISSION MOUNTS, BOTTOM BOLTS TO THE TRANSMISSION, AND IF AN AUTOMATIC FLYWHEEL RETAINING BOLTS, AFTER ALL RETAINING BOLTS FROM FLYWHEEL TRANSMISSION AND MOUNTS ARE REMOVED USE A PRY BAR AND ROCK THE TRANNY OUT, BE CAREFUL AND GET A JACK TO HELP LOWER IT OUT. TIPS: MAKE SURE CAR IS UP IN AIR AS HIGH AS POSSIBLE BEFORE PLACING JACK STAND, BECAUSE YOU CANT MOVE UP OR DOWN AT THIS POINT, ALSO THERE IS A HIDDEN 19MM BOLT ABOVE THE LOWER REAR MOUNT.

    - YOU WILL NEED 10MM, 12MM, 14MM, 17MM, 19MM SOCKETS, COUPLE OF EXTENSIONS, PLIERS, AND SOME NEW COTTER KEYS FOR THE AXLE SHAFT BOLTS (AFTER INSTALLATION) IF YOU NEED MORE DETAIL ASK I DO THIS EVERYDAY.

Torex screws on a clutch for harley 98 sportster?

okay i've been trying to remove four torex screws from my cover to change the clutch cable out and for the life of me they will not budge. i've even twisted the head on my torex wrench and nothing happens. any ideas on how to remove these?
Torex screws on a clutch for harley 98 sportster?
Use an impact hammer, a hand held ratcheted punch that takes torx bits, twist the head to the left and hit with a mallet or hammer. %26lt;$20, probably borrow 1 from your local auto parts store like O'Reilly's,
Torex screws on a clutch for harley 98 sportster?
If you have an impact driver i would suggest getting a snap-on torx bit and using it with the impact driver. This should loosen them up a bit. Also, if they wont budge after that maybe try putting some penetrating oil on them an letting it sit for like 15 minutes and try it again.
I forgot the size of the torx screw but go to your local parts store and buy a 1/4 drive torx. The same torx will work on the primaries also, make sure to clean the treads on everything with brakes parts cleaner and put a drop of lock tite on the treads.
You need a small flat ended punch that will fit inside the torx head, and a hammer. Set the tip of the punch into the bolt head and back it off slightly, leaving a silght gap and SMACK it with the hammer. You want the punch to impact the bolt....hammer-to-punch SMACK, punch-to-bolt SMACK. Do this 3 or 4 times. This is called %26quot;shocking the bolt%26quot;. Then try the torx bit (T-27)and ratchet to remove the bolt.

If this doesn't work, you will need to chisel it off. With a small SHARP chisel and hammer, cut a groove into a side of the bolt head, then angle the chisel into the slot and firmly tap rapidly with the hammer clounter-clock wise until it breaks free.

This why you should always use Never-Sieze on these bolts, on the threads, and under the bolt head....same applies to the primary chain inspection cover screws, these are tapered, counter sunk bolts that sieze constantly.

Can I change my clutch cable to a slave cylinder? If so is it a difficult task to do yourself?

I have a 1991 Nissan Sentra and I can't adjust the clutch as I could if I had a hydraulic clutch. Is it possible to make the switch from a cable to slave cylinder and master cylinder. Someone please help, my leg muscles are tired...lol....Thanks
Can I change my clutch cable to a slave cylinder? If so is it a difficult task to do yourself?
Normally cables are even easier to adjust than hydraulic linkages. There should be a pair of nuts, usually at the pedal, to adjust the cable.

Changing to hydraulic is possible but almost certainly not easy. You will need master and slave cylinders, and will have to figure out how to mount each one. To make the problem tougher, the cable you have now pulls the release fork end, cylinders push.
Can I change my clutch cable to a slave cylinder? If so is it a difficult task to do yourself?
The conversion would be out of the question for a diy job. Get someone you know and trust to adjust and oil and grease up all moving parts and perhaps change the cable. The clutch should take no more than a very tiny amount of effort to operate correctly.
It wqouldnm't help your leg muscles asnyway. what you want is an automatic transmission (and few woiuld blame you). That switch can be made but again, lots of work and $$.
CHECK UNDER DASH you shoud be able to adjust at the clutch foot pedle
it has a cable odd most nissan was always had hydraulic clutch ive had 67 up to 90 im sure you could rig something but most likely you have a problem with clutch might even be a release on spring but not sure

  • Can a clutch stop your bike from changing gear?

well i was wondering if a clutch could stop a bike from changing gear as mine doesn't i would have thought so as u can change gear without the clutch but some one said to me it could
Can a clutch stop your bike from changing gear?
If you change thee gears without the clutch fully disengaged, yours gears will wear out soon and you'll look for a gearbox replacement very soon.
Can a clutch stop your bike from changing gear?
Clutches are designed to assist gearchanging, not prevent it.

%26quot;....as mine doesn't...%26quot;; Your what doesn't what? Your clutch doesn't stop your bike changing gear? It's not meant to. Your bike doesn't change gear? You can change gear on a m/c without the clutch once you're moving, but it's not recommended as a general practice. If your bike doesn't change gear it could be something simple like the clutch needs adjustment, or it could be a much worse problem, like bent selector forks in the gearbox, which means a complete engine/gearbox stripdown.

Oil Affects it in that, if there isn't enough, you've probably already wrecked your engine anyway (if it's a 4-stroke, 'cos the engine and gearbox oil are the same) or you may have damaged only the gearbox (if it's a 2-stroke). The wrong oil in the gearbox (if 2-stroke) would make shifting difficult if it's too thick, but shouldn't prevent it altogether. If the oil was too thin, then you've wrecked it.

How do i change the clutch cable on my kawasaki ltd 550?

    Step one-get the repair manual

Step two-follow the step by step directions and photos given there.

Now gathering that the above is too much to ask- here goes

Turn the handlebar adjuster all the way in. Locate on the lower engine outter case the cable-usually on the lower right side. Take 2 wrenches of appropriate size and remove the cable from where it attaches thru the case clamp. Then unhook the end from the pivot lever. Now remove the cable from up at the handlebars, after carefully noting how it was run under the gas tank.

starting with the handlebar end-install the cable, then reroute it exactly the same way the old one was under the tank, or along the frame-which ever, and loosen the adjuster nuts on the lower end of the cable and feed it thru the case clamp. Now fish the end and hook it into the pivot lever. Now for the adjustment.-

You need to make major adjustments down at the case and finese adjustments at the handlebars. The object here is to get the ball end of the lever so it has no more than 1/4%26quot; movement. Adjust the cable using the 2 nuts -one on either side of the case clamp till this is acheived. Then finese adjust at the handlebar adjuster

    Hope this helps

Will a exedy daikin clutch kit work on acura legend?

hi i have a 91 acura legne and im changing the clutch and i need to know if exedy daikin clutch kit will last long on acura legend?. please read
Will a exedy daikin clutch kit work on acura legend?
Most exedy clutch kits are oem replacements with a bit better tolerance. Generally speaking this means around 330hp and a little less torque. Expect at least 40k miles as long as it's installed properly and you don't have any secondary problems (such as transmission fluid leakage) that will shell the clutch disk. Always resurface or replace your fly wheel when you change the clutch disk/pressure plate.

Do i need to remove the front axels to change a clutch on a subaru impreza wrx sti?
No you don't need to pull the axles to replace the clutch if you are pulling the engine to do it, but as a mechanic I can tell you it's easier to pull the transmission ,in that case yes you need to remove the axles.
Do i need to remove the front axels to change a clutch on a subaru impreza wrx sti?
Most likely yes. Ask a wrecking yard especially one that deals in these cars.

How can you change the clutch fluid in a 2002 gsxr and where is the spout located to fill it?

If you're referring to the hydraulic-actuated clutch (don't know if K2s have hydraulic or cable), it's the same deal as bleeding your brakes.

There should be a master cylinder on your left bar, and a bleed nipple (I'm not sure where, though your manual should show it, and if not, you could acquire a service manual online).

Get a bleeder kit, they're about 20 bucks and will save you making a mess.

It's often helpful to put a rag in a donut-shape around your master cylinder, to protect your bike in case you spill any fluid. (It'll damage paint)

Connect the bleeder tubing from the kit to the nipple and run it into a container. Syringe out as much fluid as you can from the MC, then put a little fluid in and do the following:

    - Crack open the nipple (just enough so that when you squeeze the lever it lets fluid out - should be about a quarter turn)

    - Squeeze lever.

    - Close nipple

    - Release lever

Repeat these steps until you see the new, clear fluid flowing out the bleeder tubing, making sure you've always got fluid in your MC (bleeding air out of the lines is a *****). Retighten the bleed nipple, disconnect the hose, and wipe off any fluid with a rag. Then fill up your MC to the line, chuck the cap back on, and you're good to go.

Check out some youtube vids to get your head around it first.
How can you change the clutch fluid in a 2002 gsxr and where is the spout located to fill it?
There is no clutch fluid. Modern bikes have a %26quot;wet clutch%26quot;, meaning that the clutch is bathed in oil from the crankcase. This way, the oil in the clutch gets changed every 3,000 miles, and it takes the additional manufacturing process of making a clutch fluid tank.
How can you change the clutch fluid in a 2002 gsxr and where is the spout located to fill it?
The %26quot;clutch fluid%26quot; is actually brake fluid and it bleeds just like the brakes do..... start at the bottom bleeder and keep adding fluid to the top as the level goes down until the same color fluid comes out the bottom. -and thats it.............. its flushed and changed.

I would have thought a motorcycle mechanic would know what you were talking about....

yea but you cant stall the engine

What are the advantages to changing my T100's clutch to a TRD High Performance Clutch?

I'm looking to replace my 96's clutch with a TRD High Performance clutch and I was wondering what the advantages are, I can get it for about $400 dollars and was wondering if it would allow me to haul more weight or anything like that, is it worth it if I'm just going to use it for hauling? If not what would be some good mods for that?
What are the advantages to changing my T100's clutch to a TRD High Performance Clutch?
For higher torque capacity, faster shifting and smooth, street-capable actuation, TRD has developed a full range of high-performance clutch kits, each a direct bolt-in replacement for the stock setup. These kits feature a high-capacity TRD pressure plate, which has been heat-treated, using a patented process, yielding increased strength, added stiffness and greater load capacity. Stiffer diaphragm springs and load straps also increase clamping force approximately 25% with an increase in pedal pressure of just 10%. The result is increased durability, especially in horsepower applications, quicker engagement during aggressive acceleration, and faster shifts. Each kit includes a new OEM Toyota clutch disc and a new throw-out bearing (with the exception of Scion xA %26amp; xB), helping to ensure smooth take-up and enhanced durability.

Is it possible to change the clutch on a 97 Renault Scenic without having to take out the engine?

Have'nt had a chance to look at it properly yet. Lost first and second gear. Hoping the linkage has come loose but expecting the worst.
Is it possible to change the clutch on a 97 Renault Scenic without having to take out the engine?
I had one of them. A blue one, used to go like the wind. I even customised mine and strapped much loved children's entertainer Basil Brush to the front grill. Had exactly the same problem as you but in reverse. Lost 5th, next 4th, you can see the pattern. I could still manage my paper round with 1st and 2nd. In the end I had to abandon it on the hard shoulder of the M62 and finish my round on foot. Its still there today if your ever passing that way. The council cut the roof off and planted flowers in it. If all else fails you could do that, I know Dermott the Irish gardening chap used a similar idea at Chelsea this year and won a silver. Hope it doesn't come to that though they are lovely little runners. Hope that helps
Is it possible to change the clutch on a 97 Renault Scenic without having to take out the engine?
either way something has to come out engine or tranny cause your clutch is on your engine but in most cases the tranny coms out
to change the clutch you just have to take your transmission out..

the engine has nothing to do with it...

the clutch plate and the pressure plate usualy wear out...

the symptoms are the pick up is lost, when you release the clutch and accelerate simultaneously......just take the gear box out...do not mess with the engine, it's gonna be stupid.!!!

How do you change a clutch cable on a 90 civic dx hatch?

i got a 1990 honda civic dx hatchback and i need to know how to replace my clutch cable?, its got the 1.5 4 cylinder motor in it.
How do you change a clutch cable on a 90 civic dx hatch?
start with the trans end the cable end has a screw shape unscrew counter clock will give the slack needed then lift the clutch arm pull the end cable down and out the notch on the arm then take it off the arm after the arm is apart pull up again on the cable to guide the cable out of the bracket on the trans now inside the car look under the dash on top of the peddle you push the peddle down to give slack the at the top there is a hook at the cable end fire wall turn left counter clock to take the black fire wall bracket off the slide out ti the motor side .

Is it possible to change the clutch on an automobile a/c compressor without removing the refrigerant?

YES IT IS BUT IT DEPENDS ON THE MAKE, MODEL AND THE YEAR.

YOU WILL ALSO NEED MANY SPECIAL TOOLS TO DO THIS TYPE OF JOB.

ONCE YOU HAVE THE OLD ONE OFF AND ARE READY TO INSTALL THE NEW ONE YOU WILL HAVE TO MAKE SURE THAT THE SHAFT THAT THE PULLEY IS ON IS NOT WORN OUT AND ALSO YOU WILL HAVE TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU SHIM THE CLUTCH HUB CORRECTLY.
Is it possible to change the clutch on an automobile a/c compressor without removing the refrigerant?
Yes the clutch is replaceable without removing the refrigerant it unbolts from the front of the compressor assembly.
Is it possible to change the clutch on an automobile a/c compressor without removing the refrigerant?
yes it is.......remove the bolt holding the clutch plate on, its in the center, then look for the snap ring on the outside, not inside, remove it and then the pulley/bearing assy will come right off.....well most of the time

    New Clutch - Still Slips!?

    Hi,

I've replaced my Mk1 Golf Gti clutch with new QH kit (Disc and plate) but it still slips!

    - No oil leaking from flywheel oil seal or gearbox

    - Adjusting cable makes zero difference - bite point changes but still slipping

Started in higher gears as normal, now slips in 2nd once warmed up a bit. Changing clutch made no difference :(

I suspect either the flywheel has been skimmed too many times or release pin isn't releasing. 'Box whines a bit and snicks into 2nd gear so maybe other internal probs make it not release properly.

Any ideas appreciated - I should know this and will be better educated when I work it out!

    Thanks :)
    New Clutch - Still Slips!?
They spray the pressure plates with silicone spray so they don't get surface rust. If you didn't clean it with BraKleen it will slip.

If the disk isn't glazed too bad, you can pull the transaxle, disassemble the clutch and spray the pressure plate and flywheel with BraKleen. Wipe the surfaces once with a CLEAN lintless rag and then spray them again with BraKleen.

Then rough up the friction disk surfaces with some sandpaper. (100-150 grit.)

Look at the pressure plate surface and make sure there aren't any blue %26quot;heat checks%26quot; on it. If there are, it should be replaced. If the flywheel has heat checks it should be resurfaced.

After a clutch starts to slip. it's best to replace the friction disk because if you just rough it up with sandpaper there's a chance that it could chatter. but if you're tight on cash, since it's a new friction disk it would be worth trying to de-glaze it with sandpaper.. When you re-assemble the clutch, keep your fingers off all the friction surfaces. Only handle the disk from the edges and keep your fingers off the pressure plate and flywheel surfaces... I know it sounds rediculous, but the oil from your fingers can actually cause a clutch to chatter.

Take a close look at the transmission shaft splines. Before bolting the pressure plate to the flywheel put the friction disk on the transmission splines and make sure it slides freely back and forth. Put a VERY LIGHT (invisible) coating of grease on the splines, clutch release rod, and on the inside of the pilot bushing/bearing.

After you replace the clutch, there should be some free-play in the pedal. If it engages close to the top, you have a linkage (cable) adjustment problem, or a geometry problem.

If it slips in high gear, stop driving the vehicle immediately or you will risk heating the pressure plate and flywheel.

(FYI - Most machine shops won't turn a flywheel if it's out of spec.)

    Good luck!
    New Clutch - Still Slips!?
right off the bat it sounds like you may need to get a new flywheel like you said it may have been resurfaced wrongly or one too many times.
First double check you got the right part number.

Second, did you turn/true the flywheel?

Third, did you replace the throwout bearing?

Fourth, how long has it been? Sometimes clutches take a little bit to get seated properly. Do you notice any burnt smell?

These are some steps to start with, and from there you need to go to your flywheel and cable, but it sounds like you've tried a number of different cable adjustments.
check the clutch arm which is located behind a plate at the rear of the gearbox.

also some vw's have a self adjusting clutch cable which cannot be re-adjusted, the only course of action with this is to replace the cable.

finally quite often i have found that the clutch can actually be dudd take it back %26amp; replace it with a luk or borg %26amp; beck type clutch
    Hi

Did you clean the preserving oil off the pressure plate?

Did you torque the pressure plate down sufficiently?

    Is the clutch cable sticking?

Is the clutch release arm returning all the way back to rest?

    Etc...Etc...Etc...Etc...Etc...!!!

    Regards

    Geordie
Check the end play on the crankshaft. A worn thrust bearing could be causing your release load to change with the crankshaft moving axially. This could simulate pushing the clutch pedal, hence, making it slip.

If you have a potted flywheel or %26quot;stepped flywheel%26quot;, equal amounts of material must removed from the clutch mounting surface and the friction face when resurfaced. If this was machined incorrectly your clutch will slip from low clamp load.
Don't forget the seal on the push rod that operates the clutch. A bad seal will allow 90wt from the trans to leak on the pressure plate and clutch disk. Some mechanics like to replace the bushing behind the seal too.
MK1 had a common problem of leaking on the center of the mainshaft where the diaphram actuation rod comes out. There is a tiny seal there that goes bad. A decent VW shop shuld be able to jump right on it. Special tools required and trany removed from vehicle, yuck.

The leakage is so small it is hard to detect, but your clutch knows!

How do you change a clutch cable for an aprilia rs 125?

do you need to take the whole engine apart just to change a cable?
How do you change a clutch cable for an aprilia rs 125?
No,wind off the adjuster on the lever that you pull. Then pull the nipple and cable out.Loosen the adjuster at the engine and do the same(it may be a good idea to photograph exactly where the cable feeds down).Once you have disconnected at both ends, you can now feed the whole cable out.Refitting is the reverse, but make sure it doesn't snag or kink anywhere and the bars turn freely without affecting operation of the clutch.Once fitted you should adjust to give 2-4mm free play on the lever.

How hard would it be to change a clutch pad myself?

Ive changed brake pad's and roaters before, how much more difficult would the clutch pad be?
How hard would it be to change a clutch pad myself?
Replacing a clutch is a big job but one definitely worth doing if you want to learn. I'd recommend doing it but like Rick said, if you've never done it then it would be good to have someone there with you who has had experience. It's not necessarily a hard job; it just takes a while. Give it a shot though. What's the worst that could happen?
How hard would it be to change a clutch pad myself?
I could be said the clutch job is no more diffciult than the brake job--when you get to it. That's the trouble. First you must seperate the transmission from the engine, first disengaging the balljoints and other parts. Then the transmission must be lowered. Afterwards, the tramsission must be raised and aligned and brought together and everything put back together. It's a whole lot more work than a brake job--and you won't be sitting outside on a milk crate the whole time either!
Considerable. To replace the clutch in most cars, you have to drop the transmission %26amp; get it out of the way. If you have a friend who has done this before, it would be worth a six-pack to get him to help, so you could learn. There are also specialized tools needs, like a input shaft stub tool. Maybe help your friend do his clutch, as a learning experience. It can be done on a garage floor, but you gotta know what you're doing....
if your talking about the clutch disc then your getting into a lot of work. it,s nothing like changing the brake pads and rotors. changing the clutch you have your work cut out for you and also you better know what your doing. for example you have to make sure the clutch disc is,nt in backwards.
If it's front wheel drive leave it to the experts. Brakes are child's play compared to a clutch.
By %26quot;clutch pad%26quot;, do you mean peddle? If so it isn't as hard as everyone is saying.
a bunch more need to come apart

can be done but might want a repair book front wheel drives not easy like a older rear wheel drive car might have been
On most cars you have to seperate the tranny from the block to get at it.. Its sort of a big job..

Help on gears changing please on my car?

im learning manuel trans and i want to know, when you start the car can i put it in 2nd gear rather than in 1gear and to go? i mean even in the winter time i don't like that you have to let go of the clutch slowly while giving little gas than remove your foot from the clutch to increase speed, and one more thing can you dump the clutch, change gear then let go of the clutch really fast? or slowly while pressing gas?
Help on gears changing please on my car?
Depends on the gearing of the tranny %26amp; the car; Some can starting moving in second, and others will buck %26amp; stall. Used to make some cars and most trucks with a 'granny low', a super low gear for towing or starting a car on a hill, but not any more. The modern computerized cars will allow you to start uphill in regular first gear. To start a manual tranny car in second you haffta slip the clutch, which does wear it faster.

You start in second on slippery snowy roads because it keeps the engine rpm's really low, which keeps the torque really low, so it doesn't spin the drive tires as easily.
Help on gears changing please on my car?
If your vehicle has enough torque, you can start in second but generally you should still start in 1st. Diesel trucks like a Cummins can start in 2nd or even 3rd.

As for the winter, don't dump the clutch, you'll transmit too much power to the ground at once resulting in tire slippage. Just taking it easy. Gas it at the friction point but not too much, slowly (but don't ride) letting off the clutch. Don't exceed what the ground can push back.
starting in 2nd is not good for your clutch, will need a new one a lot sooner

you can just drop the clutch to take off, but again wears your clutch, and you have to rev it up which when dropping the clutch will spin the tires, increase tire wear.

Motor cycle clutch.all bvikes have wet or dry clutches in them. im changing one out, but i need to know what t?

im told that there is a wet clutch, and a dry clutch ,on all makes of cycles. how can you tell the differance between a wet or a dry clutch? any one?
Motor cycle clutch.all bvikes have wet or dry clutches in them. im changing one out, but i need to know what t?
yea pretty much wat he said.....jsut want to add that if its a wet clutch setup u can jsut shuffle the clutch plates around and u'll have a clutch again unless u really fried it.......usually can do this 2-6 times depending on wear......
Motor cycle clutch.all bvikes have wet or dry clutches in them. im changing one out, but i need to know what t?
I think as a general rule, bikes with a longitudinal crankshaft, and shaft drive, have 'automotive style' single-plate dry clutches. BMW twins and Moto Guzzi, for instance. Japanese bikes with sideways four-cylinder engines have multi-plate wet clutches. If a bike has a 'clutch basket' on the side of the engine, that's a wet clutch.

WHY DO WE HAVE TO DISENGAGE THE CLUTCH (PRESS THE CLUTCH) for CHANGING GEARS IN A CAR?

    car transmisssion and clutch
WHY DO WE HAVE TO DISENGAGE THE CLUTCH (PRESS THE CLUTCH) for CHANGING GEARS IN A CAR?
You have to disengage the transmission from the engine because of the change in engine speed that occurs at shift changes.

In reality, you can slip the transmission into neutral and match the engine revs to the next gear, then get the transmission to slip into that gear, but it's very hard on both the engine and transmission. You can mess up the synchro mesh so badly that even if you use the clutch, you'll grind gears horribly.
WHY DO WE HAVE TO DISENGAGE THE CLUTCH (PRESS THE CLUTCH) for CHANGING GEARS IN A CAR?
You need to disengage the drive from the engine and allow you to shift to the gear you need effortlessly
stop yelling....put your finger into a fan....that will show you what happens when a object thats moving fast hits and object thats not.the clutch cushions the shock
double clutch - get the revs up around 5 grand

    slam the gear......
Think like this : If you can imagine two circular plates

    rotating

The first one is attached to the Clutch Pedal which you

control with your left foot---it moves up and down ,

    right ?

The other Plate operates the Gizmo that connects

with the engine ----it gives you 3 speeds forward

and one to back up with---am I right or Amarillo ?

When you disengage the Clutch by pressing the

%26quot;Clutch Pedal %26quot; down with your left foot the other

disc or plate cannot operate ! It is similar to

your wheels with the tires spinning ---but

    not touching the ground !

It is during this period that can use the Shift Lever

to change the gears from !st to 2nd to 3rd and 4th

    if you have it .

Once you move your left foot out ( slowly, slowly ) and

reengage the Clutch Plate with the Gear Plate----

    all systems are go .!

As one Plate said to the other Plate: %26quot; It takes two to

    Tango !%26quot;

does anyone have any website with intruction or factory replacment parts? or if you can just explain how to do this if theres any trouble shooting needed to be done.
How to you change the clutch on a 1985 nissan 720 4x4 pickup? or how much should i cost to get done?
OLD 4x4 are problematic because the interior where the shifters come Thur has to be removed and the gear shifters taken off and underneath the cross member rusted exhaust and drive shafts have to be removed. some technicians remove the tail housing and transfer case so they can angle out the transmission V-6 trucks one piece exhaust cross over is a real pain. Generally the charge is around 8.0 hours plus parts so at Nissan Dealer your lucky to get your truck back with about a $1,200/$1.500 charge. Then add hydraulics. Not a job for armature technicians sliding around on cardboard but it can be done. We all have to start somewhere...

I was thinking carburetter because petrol is constantly leaking form the float chamber out of the over flow. Could the mixture be wrong too.?
Aprilia RS 125. I was struggling setting off because I thought that the clutch plates needed changing?
    First fix the leak.

Clean the float needle and seat - a spec of dirt is all that is needed to prevent the float needle from sealing closed the fuel supply.

The fuel level in the float bowl will then become to high and flood

the engine slightly - just enough to prevent quick acceleration.

Make sure the air cleaner is clean.
Aprilia RS 125. I was struggling setting off because I thought that the clutch plates needed changing?
Caburetter needs sorting out for a start and a tune up.
either its been tuned for high end performance and thus lost all its low down power or the gearing has been changed to improve top speed, as for the carb, mixture really only matters at idle, but get the flooding sorted before you blow yourself up, only kidding, but fix it,

Always change the pilot bushing in the end of the crankshaft. And use an alignment tool when you bolt down the pressure plate and clutch disk to the flywheel. If you don't have a puller for the bushing you can fill the hole with grease and get a bolt that just threads into the bushing.Tighten the bolt down and the pressure will force the pilot bushing out.

  • How to change a clutch on a 4x4 Dodge power ram 250?

I have done many things with cars and trucks most of it body work. Most of the things i have done were simple like a intake manifold and carb for my mustang, plugs \ wires, the hardest thing was a transmissionn on a taurus. But the truck is an 88 btw any tips or pointers?? thanks
How to change a clutch on a 4x4 Dodge power ram 250?
you dont you take it to the junkyard and buy ford f250 turbo desiel
How to change a clutch on a 4x4 Dodge power ram 250?
This is a big task on a 4x4. Both driveshafts need to be marked for location and removed. This means the wheels and tires need to be chocked. The nice thing is there is room to work with out a lift. The transfer case sits on the crossmember and is bolted to the rear of the trans. Using a block of wood and a floor jack positioned under the transmission will support the weight. The trans. should be able to seperate from the bell housing and the crossmember unbolt from the frame and the hole unit can be slid back about 4 inches. A couple C clamps positioned at the crossmember, the floor jack, and even a jack stand will keep this stationary so the pressure plate, flywheel, and disc can be removed. Doing it this way requires at least 2 people, please don't attempt this by yourself. If you are, a different method is needed.

I would recommend having the flywheel resurfaced or replaced, this will provide the best wear and life of the clutch. Most auto parts stores offer the clutch disc by itself or a clutch kit. The clutch kit has the disc, pressure plate, throw out bearing, and an alignment tool. Go with the kit, it will save a lot of head aches later. Make sure to use brake parts cleaner on the pressure plate and flywheel prior to assembling the cluch disc. This will remove any dirty and grease from the mating surfaces.

If I remember correctly this job books out at around 14 hours. Of course they expect you to disassemble the transfer case from the transmission. This saves about 3 hours. When using a jack stand, do not place it on the transmission input shaft, this could damage the inner bearing. Also replace the pilot bushing or rearing in the rear of the crankshaft.

The shifters will need to be removed, both the trans. and the transfer.

A lot of work, but it can be done. Hope this helps. Christopher
if its a 4 wheel drive its actually easier to pull the engine out than to try and pull the transmission and transfer case out ,unless you own a transmission jack,i have pulled more engines than transmissions to replace clutches because its easier and quicker, the only problem you have with doing it like this is it takes two people to do it and their real hard to line back up sometimes, but it still takes less time than removing the drive shafts and all the related parts to the 4 wheel drive, good luck.
Sometimes it's easier to pull the engine to replace clutch. Just a thought.

Anyone know how to change the clutch for a Integra?

I was wondering if anyone can give me the info on how to change it. I'm trying not to go to the shop because money is tight now.

Leave it alone, unless you are a trained mechanic you can easily end up with problems, misalignment, rear seal leaks, etc.

    mechanics guarantee their work.
you have to pull the motor to put in a Honda/Acura clutch...leave it for a repair shop or you will have more trouble than you bargained for.
Hey, This is not an easy job for everyday person, it does take a few special tools, and a lot of regular tools. I'm not saying that you cant do it, but I would recomend that if you do, buy a chilton book and read it well. I have done lots of them, and it takes me several hours, even with a lift and lots of air tools. Good luck

How do I tell if I have an aftermarket/racing clutch?

I bought my car used and looked through the engine and saw that the guy who had it before me did some pretty nice modifications and I was wondering if maybe he changed the clutch to a racing clutch (ie stage 3, etc). Is there any way Id be able to tell?

How do I tell if I have an aftermarket/racing clutch?
take it a part an dgo buy a stock one and hold it up side the one you have now if it dont look th e same its not
It will be harder to depress than a normal clutch.
well there is a way to know about your pressure plate but the clutch disc would have to be looked at but if your clutch pedal takes a lot of pressure to push it in will let you know how heavy duty your pressure plate is

I will need to remove the transmission and I have been told that I will need to remove the torsion bars at the front. This sound a little out of the ordinary. Please advise.

Sounds a little odd but you really need to list what motor you have?

Like with any mechanical job it's up to you to look at it and see for your self what needs to be done. The bar doesn't have to be removed but it probably makes it a whole lot easier to remove the tranny. Don't forget to resurface your flywheel, change both bareings and the oil seal.
