Volvo 850 2.5 clutch slip or traction control?

hi ,im certain its cluch slip but could a fault with the traction control have the same effect ? switching tracs on or off dos'nt seem to do any thing ,i have no idea how or what it does so i wanted to rule this out before striping anything,

theres no oil leak so i dont expect clutch end oil seal to be the cause ,im guessing but i think car has been used to pull a caravan ,is it possible to change clutch plate whithout splitting emgine and gear box

the traction control on this model will apply the brake to the wheel that is spinning that doesn't sound like what is happening for you

while i have not had to replace an 850 clutch. i have had numerous automatics out for torque convertor seal replacement [both turbo and normally asperated] it is much easier[and faster] to remove the engine and transmission together as a unit with the wiring harnesses still on them from the top

than to be squirreling around underneath pulling subframes, hanging the engine etc.

[the wiring harness seperates inside the computer box, ac will have to be drained and tube removed from rt. front corner of engine bay and rt.headlamp assembely must be removed on some models.

a cherry picker type engine hoist and a adjustable [tilts engine/trans as it comes out]

lifting bracket must be used [the auto boxes have a rubber slap mount on the left subframe that must be removed/renewed for clearance] [20 dollars east coast u.s.]

the manual trans model may not have one at all.

once all is out, they can be split normally [one last note if you replace the rear main engine seal make a driver out of a piece of pcv plastic pipe to ensure the new seal goes in perfectly square].

the first time i did this i beat the standard repair time by more than a couple hours. the added bonus of doing it this way is that other services can be accomplished in minuites instead of extra hours [ie: timing componants, water pump, additional tune up services, throttle body cleanout etc.]

one last note get a good shop manual for your car and study it thouroghly before starting this project and while it can be accomplished by one person it is best to have a spotter while doing the removing and installing part, as body clearances are tight. beer is not recommended until after the test drive.

If the engine revs rise up when your driving and the engines under load the its your clutch.Dont panic ,the volvo 850 is an easy box to remove.Disconect the exhaust first then remove prop shaft, remove the gearbox mounting and let the engine tip back to give you room to get the top bell housing bolts. If you havnt got use of a ramp or a pit, jack it up high and put 4 axle stands under it.Use the jack to lower the gearbox, youll need someone to help you with this,so buy a crate of beer and get some mates round.Get a manual it will explain about lining the new clutch up and any other unforseen difficultys
They're completely different symptoms: If th engine note rises, it's clutch slip - the TCS system cuts the throttle.

The clutch is between engine %26amp; gearbox, so you'll have a hell of a job changing it without splitting them - can all be done in car though, I think.
it needs a new clutch...sorry gearbox has to come off to change...on some early vauxhalls you could replace the clutch with out removing the box...but not on the volvo...
