How to change the clutch in a 1997 Volkswagen VW Jetta GLX VR6?

I have to change the clutch in my 1997 Volkwagen Jetta GLX VR6--have instructions but it doesn't say if I have to drop the engine or not? Any other viable information you may have is also appreciated.

If its rear wheel drive then no. You can remove the driveshaft and withdraw the transmission straight back. If its front wheel drive its more then often easier to remove the entire engine and and set it down on the floor and work on it.

You usually support the engine from the top by placing something strong (ie 4x4 wood) across the engine bay (inner fender lip to inner fender lip).

You'll need special 'triple square' bits to remove axles from flanges on tranny.
technically the official why is to keep the engine inside the bay just detach 2 of the 3 engine mounts and the axle at the tranny in order to lift the engine up at an angle in or to have enough room to slide the tranny bell housing off. But lets face it everything is in a tight place so its much easier to lift the car and lower the engine on the tranny side or keep the car on the ground and lift the engine up. Just as long as you slade the the axle out at the wheel. But most people just take the whole engine out for VR6's when doing it in a home garage.
